Professional artist Michael Carini talks about how to navigate creative block

How To Work Through Artist Block

Creative block is one of the most common issues for artists. Do you experience it? How do you work through it? It's definitely something I have to navigate, particularly as a professional artist with a rigid schedule and deadlines. I have an upcoming article in Painting World Magazine diving more thoroughly into this issue, but let's chat about it for a minute.

None of us can be at our peak 24/7/365. That's a fact. We are not robots. We are not AI...an issue to discuss another time. It's totally okay to take a break or have down time for recovery and wellness, but it's also so easy to drag that down time further and further out. The further out it gets, the harder it can be to come back.

If you are always seeking motivation and inspiration from external sources, they will forever be fleeting. The solution that will put you in your power place is to learn to create that from within. Here's my suggestion. I have always viewed this like a fitness routine. When you're creative muscles get tired, you may just need to warm them up. Try something low stress like organizing your work space, mixing some colors, or prepping a canvas. That step, as little as it may be, is still a step. With a little discipline and consistency, those baby steps can become giant leaps.

If you've been in a rut beyond what you would constitute a reasonable break, you may just need to get started and do something. It may not be pretty, but it doesn't have to be. Maybe that's what you need to pull out of you to get back to the good stuff. You can either make the excuse of why you're not ready to get started, or you can make the excuse of why you are ready to get started. It may not take much. Try something. Get started.

I have a ton of support for artists and I often give the milk away for free, because **** the corporate farm. Join me on this journey, and if you want to help me out, let people know about me and what I do ❤️
