I got a comically funny rejection today that I wanted to share with all of you as a reminder that juried opportunities are so subjective. Just for fun...feel free to rate me on these things yourself in the comments 🤣
Originality:
Technique/Crafsmanship:
Design Composition:
Consistency:
Presentation:

One judge gave me a 6/10 on originality. I think that for those that know my work, you could show them 1,000 paintings with one of mine hidden in there, and they would be able to pick it out.
One judge gave me a 6/10 on technique and craftsmanship. My techniques, some of which are uniquely my own, are executed with surgical precision.
One judge gave me a 4/10 on design composition. Hmmm...
One judge gave me a 6/10 on consistency. These works are from the same series. The same judge says in the notes that my subject could be more varied, directly going against their previous mark against me.Â
One judge gave me a 4/10 on presentation. My edges are clean and painted black for professional gallery presentation.Â
I legit got a 26/50 from one judge, with my highest review being 35/50.
Bear in mind that I'm a career artist with gallery representation across the country. I've exhibited at major art fairs and alongside historically significant artists. I have sold over 7 figures in art, paid off my loans 10 years early from the money I made on my art, and have had a number of licensing deals. I am not better than a single person, but I feel pretty competent about myself as an artist.
This almost feels like there was some personal vendetta against me lol. Oh well. At the end of the day, I'm cool with the rejection. It shows me that I want no part of this organization, and that's a valuable lesson. I can now focus on where my efforts are celebrated. Despite what social media will try to tell you, we all deal with rejection. Don’t let the opinions of others stop you from doing what you love or being true to yourself. There’s always another opportunity 💙
